a big THANK YOU

2nd August 2015 by Buff

Many thanks to the intrepid FreeSpirit Explorers who attended our 2015 North Wales Summer Camp – Euan, Jack, Rob, Alex, Rod, Lewis. Your good humour, hard work and willingness to try anything truly made this a great camp.

We are already looking forward to seeing you all on a packed term’s programme this coming Sepember and on next Summer’s annual camp.

…and a big thank you to the mums and dads for your continued support, and all of your blog comments. (Highest blogger won by Heather!)

Flaming Pillars of death…and a few bruises!

31st July 2015 by Buff

Following an amazing chilli, we headed outside to end the camp by launching a few Chinese lanterns…(for those of you in the know, they were the last from the infamous “Youlbury” vintage…say no more!). As dusk was deepening and working in teams of three we managed to launch a number of lanterns over the nearby fields…before heading inside for the “bruise” competition and our final film night.

The “bruise” competition:

As you have probably guessed, this was the post paintballing “who’s got the most bruises”. There were two titles up for grabs -1. the person with the most bruises (Won by Mike), and 2. the most amazing bruise (Won by Euan with a collarbone special!)…enjoy

Historical Chester….and 1000 paintballs!

31st July 2015 by Buff

Our last full day has arrived! After our usual “big boy” breakfast (sausages, bacon, mushrooms, black pudding, baked beans etc) we piled into our trusty mini bus and headed off for Chester. The morning was free time – wandering around this lovely historical city.

Mike found the shop that was appropiate to his age!

But the real reason for coming to Chester (and the main event) was to spend the afternoon paintballing!

Five different scenarios (Lego, tyres, church, missile attack, Hamburger Hill) – 10 games in all. The Unit was split into 2 teams to partake in our “Call of Duty” fantasy’s, which saw plenty of camping, no-scoping and shouts of “man down, man down”….and no mater how many times we asked, we never did get a “Huey Medivac”!

Five hours of combat later, we dragged our battered and bruised bodies back to the “APC” and took “red route 1” back to our fire-base – aka, Penycae…..more on bruises later!

Full Moon…fresh bread…and hammocks

31st July 2015 by Buff

Another great evening. Following our excellent curry, the unit all setup their hammocks in the nearby wood.

This was immediately followed by Mike reallocating the Moon (hopefully you were not inconvenienced by the odd tsunami)!

The evening late film couldn’t finish soon enough and then a first night in hammocks for many commenced. One conversation, overheard “loving my hammock, but can someone please turn out the big light…

3G Swing…and chillout

30th July 2015 by Buff

The final challenge of the day was the multi-person 3G-Swing.

This involved being clipped onto a big steel girder…gently lifted backwards and up to the top of the tree line.

Then…

One, two, three…pull the release……….

And you were catapulted through the air towards the ground and then off over the centre buildings…before swinging back again…fantastic!

…and then home again for tea (chicken curry) and a chill.

Fan Decender…of death!

30th July 2015 by Buff

Following our intrepid tree-top challenges, we headed for the largest tree in the forest and a test of fitness (to reach the tree-top platform) and a massive test in believing in oneself (and the safety kit!). The climb up this tree took 5-10 minutes. Once at the top, we clipped into the safety line before moving to the “launch” point. Here we were attached to the fan decender line…and then it was time to fly!

One, two, three…step off…

Enjoy!!

Tree-Top Challenge

30th July 2015 by Buff

Today we woke to a sunny sky! How fickle can the weather be!!!!

Into the bus and back to Betws y Coed to Tree Top Adventure…Following a detailed safety briefing and kit check, we were led up into the trees and set off on our first tree-top challenge – the orientation ring. This was a series of challenges involving moving from one tree to the next (normally 5-10 meters away). The method of crossing could be wobbly planks, a single rope, old tyres, of a Tarzan swing. At this point we were only 6-8 feet from the ground.

Once we had all survived the “orientation ring” we went on to similar challenges…but we were now 40 feet up!

The final challenge was a 50 feet straight drop on a “fan decender”…a serious test of belief in ones safety kit…little did we know that this was a mere baby compared to our next challenge…more of that later, enjoy the photos.
